Microneedling

Abaut Micro-Needling:

Micro-Needling, originally known as collagen induction therapy or percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is now a well-documented treatment option in atrophic acne scars and for skin rejuvenation. The therapeutic indications for this treatment option have increased over the last few years to include transdermal drug delivery, treatment of periorbital melanosis, actinic keratosis and varicella scars.

Micro-Needling  is a palette of rejuvenating & anti-age, beauty facial skin treatments. The procedure is aimed at stimulating of microcirculation and the natural processes of collagen production and regeneration. (It has also been successfully used for hair restoration in cases of non-androgenic alopecia.)

How is  Micro-Needling performed?

Micro-Needling is usually performed under the influence of a topical anaesthetic cream. The cream, which contains a eutectic mixture of lignocaine and prilocaine/tetracaine, is applied for a minimum of 25 minutes before the procedure is started. The needle length selected for an individual patient depends upon the indication for micro-Needling.

How skin will be after the treatment?

After the procedure, the skin will be red and flushed on appearance in a similar way to moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours the skin will be completely healed. After 3 days, most visible erythema will be absolved.

Be Prepared for These Side Effects Typically Seen After Skin Needling

  • Skin will be pink or red and may feel warm, like mild sunburn, tight and itchy, which usually subside in 12 to 24 hrs.
  • Minor flaking or dryness of the skin, with scab formation in rare cases.
  • Crusting, discomfort, bruising and swelling may occur.
  • Pinpoint bleeding.
  • It is possible to have a cold sore flare if you have a history of outbreaks.
  • Freckles may lighten temporarily or permanently disappear in treated areas.

Scar management:

Scar treatment still remains a challenge for practicing dermatologists. Scarring continues to be a distressing condition for the patient, especially when it involves the face at a young age, this is seen commonly after acne. Post-acne scarring, besides causing cosmetic disfigurement, leads to psychological issues in this age group.

01. Keloid
If you skin needle a keloid you will activate more collagen formation hence the keloid will grow further which is the last thing a person with a keloid wants to see happen. Remember one of the most important things skin needling does, is stimulates collagen production so this is potentially a disaster for keloid prone individuals! A keloid is thick overgrown scar resulting from excessive growth of collagen that can occur after injury and is more prevalent in people from African descent.
02. Haemophiliacs and Other Blood Disorders
If you suffer from any condition where your body does not have the ability to produce adequate platelets to stop bruising and bleeding then this procedure is not for you.
03. Skin Disease
Suffering from any type of skin disease would most likely be a contraindication to Skin Needling.
04. Poor Health
Anyone that is under medical care for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, suffers from a compromised immune system and is generally considered to be a poor healer, is most likely not a candidate for Skin Needling.
05. Anticoagulants
Need to wait until this is fully recovered otherwise the fluid in the cold sore (that contains thousands of active Herpes Simplex viruses) will have an effective vehicle to spread easily and readily to unaffected skin regions spreading the contamination effectively! Skin therapists can work around these lesions, but we recommend that you wait so all the skin can be worked on in the one session and there is no risk of spread whatsoever.
06. Active Shingles or Chicken Pox (Varicella-Zoster Virus)
Is a highly contagious virus hence the same applies as above. Shingles are essentially the reactivation of chickenpox virus usually seen in elderly or immune-compromised individuals.
07. Just had Invasive Skin Laser Treatment
Need to wait until the skin fully recovers before any further procedures are undertaken.
08. Just had Botox or Other Injectable
Need to wait approximately 2 months before any further procedures are undertaken especially if injected with Teosyal, Sculptra or Artefill.
09. Just had Dermal Fillers
With dermal fillers you can undertake skin needling 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after the dermal fillers are inserted.
10. Just had Facial Surgery
Need to wait until the skin fully recovers before any further procedures are undertaken. Usually 6 months is a safe estimate and clearance from your surgeon.
11. New Scars
Need to wait until the skin fully recovers before any further procedures are undertaken. Usually, 6 months is a safe estimate.
12. Corticosteroids
If you are currently prescribed corticosteroids best to avoid skin needling as these drugs have a skin thinning effect. The longer you are on this medication the bigger the effect on the skin. The skin would need to be examined on a case by case basis and clearance from your doctor is also advised.
13. Pregnancy & Breast Feeding
Your body is very busy during this phase developing and feeding your baby, so best not to add the burden of tissue repair especially if you have a choice. Some pregnancies can be complicated such as gestational diabetes so not all things are always easy. There is also a risk of having a reaction and even though we always do a precautionary “skin test patch” during your initial consultation, we would nevertheless prefer our pregnant and breast feeding patients not to experience this at all. Medical clearance from your doctor would be required prior any skin needling appointments.
